Church of the Home for Saturday, May 10

Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, was elected as the 267th Bishop of Rome on May 8, 2025. He is the first North American pope, hailing from Chicago.

Our new pope's journey to the papacy began with his ordination as a priest in the Order of Saint Augustine in 1982. Over the years, he has served in various capacities, including extensive missionary work in Peru, where he became deeply involved in pastoral care and education. His election marks a significant moment for the Catholic Church, as he brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective shaped by his diverse background.

Pope Leo XIV has expressed a commitment to continuing the modernizing reforms initiated by his predecessor, Pope Francis. In his first formal audience, he emphasized the importance of addressing contemporary challenges, particularly those posed by artificial intelligence. He believes that the Church must respond to these changes to defend human dignity, justice, and labor. His vision for the Church includes a focus on social justice and the protection of vulnerable communities, reflecting his deep-rooted values and dedication to serving humanity.

Pope Leo XIV's leadership promises to be one of compassion and inclusivity. His pastoral experience and missionary work have equipped him with a profound understanding of the needs of diverse communities. He aims to foster a sense of unity and solidarity within the Church, encouraging us to live out our faith through acts of kindness and service.

His papal motto, "In illo Uno unum" (In the One, we are one), underscores his belief in the power of unity and collective action. As we navigate the complexities of modern life, Pope Leo XIV's guidance offers a beacon of hope and a call to embrace the values of love, justice, and community.

Supporting Pope Leo XIV's initiatives can be a meaningful way for Churches of the Home to contribute to the Church's mission and values. Here are some practical steps:

  1. Engage with Digital Platforms: Pope Leo XIV has emphasized the importance of responding to the digital revolution. Churches of the Home can support this initiative by actively participating in online forums, social media, and virtual communities that promote the Church's teachings and values. Sharing positive messages, engaging in respectful dialogue, and spreading awareness about the Church's stance on contemporary issues can help amplify his vision.

  2. Volunteer and Community Service: Pope Leo XIV's focus on social justice and the protection of vulnerable communities can be supported through volunteer work and community service. Churches of the Home can get involved in outreach activities at Resurrection and support local charitable organizations that assist those in need. This hands-on approach not only helps those who are less fortunate but also strengthens the sense of community and solidarity within the Church.

  3. Educational Initiatives: Supporting the Pope's emphasis on education and pastoral care can be achieved by promoting and participating in educational programs within the Church. Churches of the Home can encourage each other to attend faith formation opportunities, engage in religious studies, and participate in discussion/social groups. Additionally, adults can benefit from attending workshops, seminars, and retreats that focus on deepening their understanding of the faith and its application in modern life.

By taking these steps, Churches of the Home can actively contribute to the realization of Pope Leo XIV's initiatives, fostering a more engaged and vibrant Church community.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS

In the excitement of the election of Pope Leo XIV, we remember the importance of living your vocation, just as Robert Prevost has.

Before his passing, Pope Francis released his message for this year's World Day of Prayer for Vocations, which is this Sunday. Entitled “Pilgrims of Hope: The Gift of Life,” the message emphasizes that every vocation—whether to ordained ministry, consecrated life, or the laity—should be a sign of God’s hope for humanity. He acknowledges the challenges, such as insecurity and identity crises, but reassures that God loves and calls all as pilgrims of hope.

Vocations are significant in fostering a vibrant and faithful community. We remember this weekend the diverse paths through which we can serve God and humanity, whether through ordained ministry, consecrated life, or lay vocations. We must reflect on our own calling and to support others in discerning their vocations, especially those discerning the call to the priesthood, deaconate, and religious life. It is important we consciously nurture and accompany young people in their spiritual journeys, ensuring that they feel supported and inspired to respond to God's call with hope and confidence.

MOTHERS' DAY

During the month of May, Catholics pay special honor to our Blessed Mother, Mary. It is also the month of Mother’s Day, when we honor all mothers and mother figures. We celebrate their love, dedication, and sacrifices.

This weekend, take time to reflect on the profound role that mothers and mother figures play in nurturing faith, values, and compassion within the Churches of the Home and beyond.

Mother's Day also provides an opportunity for us to remember and pray for the Blessed Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, who serves as a model of maternal love and devotion.

Join us for Mass this weekend in person at 8:00 on Saturday, 8:30 or 10:30 on Sunday, on www.gbres.org/live, our YouTube channel, and our Facebook page.
