Church of the Home for Saturday, July 6

The Rule of St. Benedict

On July 11th, we commemorate St. Benedict, known for his Rule that revolutionized Western monasticism. Benedict's Rule prioritizes internal attitudes over external practices, emphasizing humility, obedience, and communal living for spiritual growth.

The Rule of St. Benedict remains a timeless document, just as fresh and relevant today as it was nearly fifteen hundred years ago. While originally intended for monastics, the principles outlined in the Rule can be adapted to life outside the monastery. St. Benedict taught the importance of balance of prayer, work, study, and leisure, which resonates with people from all walks of life. The Rule provides valuable guidance and structure for individuals aiming to uphold their faith in today's society.

Prayer forms the basis of monastic life and vocation, but it can also be an integral part of the lives of non-monastics. Benedict illustrates the importance of structuring our day around communal prayer, such as praying the Divine Office, along with engaging in regular silent prayer, meditation, and lectio divina (reflecting prayerfully on Holy Scripture).

Work encompasses not only paid employment but also service within our faith communities and contributions to our family life. Benedict emphasizes that all work is valuable, bestowing dignity upon every individual, particularly when our work glorifies God through serving the community.

Study may involve reading Holy Scripture, the Rule, wisdom literature, or engaging in group study to enrich our spiritual and intellectual growth.

Hospitality extends to welcoming strangers into our lives and showing kindness to those already present. Approaching each other with respect and welcoming every person as if they were Christ is essential for fostering a culture of hospitality.

Renewal can be achieved through observing a Sabbath, pursuing activities that remind us of God's presence, or taking time to appreciate beauty and love in our daily lives. It serves as a reminder that our lives revolve around the Divine and that God is the ultimate focal point of our Rule of Life.
