Church of the Home for Saturday, August 31

Labor Day

Established in 1894 to honor the “social and economic achievements” of American workers, Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September.

On this Labor Day, we are reminded of the Catholic social teaching of the dignity of work and the rights of workers. It is our responsibility to ensure that workplaces are safe, just, and respectful of human dignity, as we reflect on the value of each individual's contribution.

Our work is a way for us to participate in creation. It is a crucial aspect of human life, setting us apart from the rest of creation. As the book of Genesis tells us, from the very beginning, Adam was tasked with working the garden of Eden: “The LORD God then took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden, to cultivate and care for it” (Genesis 2:15).

This weekend, reflect on the significance of work in your life and honor those who contribute to society through their labor. Thank God for the gift of labor, and ask for God's help in providing work for all, especially praying for those who work in dignity-degrading jobs and those who have lost their jobs.

"Every worker is the hand of Christ that continues to create and to do good.”

- St. Ambrose

READINGS FOR THIS WEEKEND’S MASSES

VIRTUALLY SUNDAY REFLECTION

We've all heard someone say 'I'm spiritual but not religious' with the notion that religion is a dirty word. But everyone needs a loving, compassionate, and caring community of faith. Jesus emphasized the importance of relationships and love in religion, rather than just rituals. Religion is never a bad word when it binds us together in love. Join Fr. Paul as he reflects on the scripture readings for this weekend.
