| The areas of study we address in Kindergarten are as follows: Reading Readiness – We introduce and practice letter & sound identification, pre-reading skills including concepts of print, phonemic awareness, rhyming, predicting and retelling stories, and listening. We also learn sight words, work with word families, and do daily journal writing. Math Readiness – We introduce and practice number recognition, comparing, patterning, graphing, measuring/weighing, telling time to the hour and half hour, identifying pennies, nickels, and dimes, and their value, and simple adding and subtracting. General Readiness – We introduce, practice, and master the basics: color and shape recognition, recognizing our own names, using school supplies and equipment properly, knowing our safety information (parent’s names, address, phone number) Handwriting – We learn letter and number formation utilizing the Zaner Bloser method. Social Studies – We discuss recognizing differences and similarities among our families, our community, and other cultures. Science – We explore, observe, investigate, and discover the natural world around us. Religion - We explore stories from the Bible, work with weekly Promise Papers, and attend Mass. Miscellaneous- Kindergarteners participate in a variety of classroom activities including fieldtrips, show and tell, student of the week, the writer’s briefcase, the surprise box, and traveling Curious George activities.
