Churches Offering Temporary Support (COTS)
Resurrection Parish is stepping up our hospitality spirit this May. Along with several other churches within the city of Green Bay and its nearby communities, our parish will be providing shelter for individuals who have nowhere to stay at night during the summer. We have volunteered to provide nightly shelter for 2 weeks, May 13-May 27th.
St. John’s Homeless Shelter (SJHS) and Micah Center staff will be overseeing this endeavor. Churches are only asked to provide a space for 10-30 people. The SJHS staff will be at the church to admit the guests, provide intake and supervision. The guests will not have meals here or need showers. That will be provided at the Micah Center. They will arrive at 9PM each evening and leave by 6:30AM each morning. They will be sleeping on mats provided by SJHS in our parish hall 1&2 and family room. Guests for the most part will be bussed from the Micah Center at night and back there in the morning. SJHS will be present at all times.
St John’s Homeless Shelter, where many of our parishioners volunteer during the winter months, is a temporary shelter that takes in anyone in need of shelter, even those denied shelter at other places in the area. But it has only a Conditional Use Permit with the City of Green Bay that sets it days of operation for Nov. 1-April 30th. Keeping it open year round would require a new Permit from the city. It would also require many more staff hours and volunteers to keep it running which is cost prohibitive at this time.
COTS is a wonderful opportunity for churches throughout the area to fill this need and to live the Gospel in action. We are so pleased that our Parish Pastoral Council approved going forth with this effort. We look forward to partnering with SJHS and Micah Center. A set of FAC can be found on our website if you have any questions. Or feel free to speak with the parish staff with your questions.
