Bottled Poetry

     Wine is bottled poetry.

                        Robert Louis Stevenson

Wine intoxicates as does a good poem.

Try reading Shakespeare’s sonnets

or Frost’s “The Road Not Taken”

or Denise Levertov’s “Primary Wonder”

without losing your balance or

becoming giddy, perhaps insecure in speech.

I know the ancient wisdom: “In wine there is truth” –

                        In vino veritas!

But, in due respect, Mr. Stevenson,

is not poetry bottled wine,

rather than wine being bottled poetry?

As you may surmise

I am currently reading poetry

with a half-empty bottle of wine nearby.
