Sam was asked: “So what is prayer?”
The ninth grader, not noted for theological erudition,
did not quote the Catechism’s definition
about prayer being a lifting of mind and heart to God,
nor the Tradition’s distinction of adoration,
petition, contrition, and thanksgiving,
nor how contemplation differs from formal prayer.
Sam paused, scratched his head, and said:
“Prayer is spilling your guts to God!”
The teacher was impressed.
