The Apple/  Auxiliary Temptations

In Eden,

in the innocent days of Adam and Eve,

in the days of the apple,

no mention was made

of auxiliary temptations –

            warm apple pie,

            delicious apple cider,

            succulent apple sauce.

How could anyone,

let alone our first parents,

resist the apple in disguise?

Just yesterday

I broke my Lenten vow of abstaining

from eating between meals,

when, at 10:00 a.m.,

a still warm apple pie arrived.

I did hear my guardian angel

            (not that nasty sly serpent) whisper,

“It would be sin not to have a piece of that pie.”
