The Gaze of Mercy

(On reading Raniero Cantalamessa’s

The Gaze of Mercy)

It’s a form of love,

Jesus’ gaze of mercy,

filled with forgiveness of sin,

filled with tenderness and compassion.

It’s the source of peace,

Jesus’s glance at Peter,

His election of Matthew the tax collector,

His encounter with the sycamored Zacchaeus.

Let vengeance be gone,

let revenge be ended,

let hope reign in human hearts.
